Personal:

I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

12.7 miles, Full Santaquin Orchard loop with Jen (8 miles) + shortened loop solo (4.7 miles).  I took a quick 2 min break in between to blow the frozen snot from my nose and then got right back out there.  I knew that if I stopped for too long I wouldn't make it back out.  It was 10 degrees when we started and 12 when I finished.  Roads were pretty dry which was a good thing because I did not have to practice my ice running skills but also meant that of course the energizer bunny Jen went faster.  A really good workout for me and seriously despite the cold temps about a zillion times better than the treadmill!  When Jen and I finished we were at a 7:20 pace and I just wanted to try and keep it there for my extra miles.  Finished the 12.7 at a 7:19 pace.  My last mile before the .7 cooldown was 6:45 which effort wise felt about like a 6:15 but in this weather I will take it.

Does anyone have opinions about pace conversion when running in this cold of weather?  In my opinion it takes more effort to run faster but I could be totally off my rocker and am curious what others think.

Nice job getting in your run in those miserable conditions. I definitely think the cold affects your pace especially if you don't have good footing. With bad footing and 10 degree temps I think it's reasonable to estimate it adds at least 20-30 seconds.

this calculator has a temperature conversion feature: http://www.runworks.com/calculator.html

but i would say if you are dressed properly, the biggest reason for the slow down in these conditions is the footing, not the temperature. there is no footing in utah right now.

Nice run and pace this morning in these cold conditions! 100% think it influences your pace. I was having such a hard time even holding my long run pace. GOOD THING you are heading south for a few days :) Enjoy the nicer weather.

Yay for dry roads!

I think slippery roads are the biggest culprit for slower paces in the winter... when its really cold I find it hard to do the real quality stuff (faster than MP), cause its just hard to breathe enough oxygen. Winter workouts definitely require a lot more warming up... I like to run easy for at least 30 minutes before starting anything faster when its freezing.

Nice pace on your run Rachelle! With that cold of temperatures and risk of ice it is best to just go on feel!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think a lot of it for me is mental because I associate cold/crappy weather with slow base mileage running. It is hard for me to want to move fast when it is cold.

Nice miles Rachelle! That's one heck of a pace (especially in the cold). Interesting question you posted, too. I've been wondering about that, too. It may just be all in my head by i feel i get dizzier and find it harder to concentrate in the colder temps, too.
