Personal:

I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

I realized yesterday that I only really have 2 weeks to train for the impulsive half marathon I signed up for.  The race will be more of a benchmark than anything but still I would like to run it well.  So that realization and the fact that my easy run pace has been getting faster and faster lately (itching for a workout) I decided to throw down a tempo this morning.  Progressive tempo run.  2 mile warmup 6:56, 6:45, 6:44, 6:43, 6:27.  1 mile cooldown and then I added on 2 miles because I was just lost in my thoughts and had extra time.  My effort was WAY too hard on that last mile and I was definitely dipping into that VO2 max effort but the workout felt good.

Okay random question of the day.  I noticed while I was cooling down and watching my little running shadow that I tuck my arms in really tight and high when I run.  When watching the mens 5000 yesterday (I had it recorded because I missed it) I noticed that they keep there arms lower at more a 90 degree angle.  Does any of this mean anything?  I tried lowering my arms to the perfect 90 degree angle that Gaylon Rupp seemed to run so effortlessly at and it felt way different.  Not sure if it was easier or harder but just different.  Okay signing off because clearly I'm losing my mind!

I would have dipped into VO2 range if I tried to keep up with you this morning.

I don't know if I asked you already, but are you planning on running a fall marathon?

From Rachelle on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:00:15 from 199.190.170.22

Yes I would like to run a fall marathon. I am not signed up for anything yet though. Maybe TOU? I just don't know.

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:04:42 from 67.172.235.55

I run like that (or so it seems from looking at my race photos). I think it is a good thing, should anyone mess with my my arms are primed and ready to knock them out!

Great speed this morning. I think I could maybe do that downhill! You were moving, you should get lost in your thoughts more often.

TOU sucks. ;o) But you should do it, Allie sure loves it.

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:17:57 from 155.100.226.54

I wasn't sure if you had applied / gotten into StG.

TOU will be a popular one this fall!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:25:29 from 199.190.170.22

The funny thing is I didn't even consider SGM because of how hard the heat was on me last year and finishing completely dehydrated and delirious. I swore off of running in the heat forever.........and then Boston happened and I had no choice. Fortunetely I think I have things figured out now but the wounds from SGM are still to fresh. :)

You never know what kind of weather you are going to get, but after a heat-fest and a wind-fest for you this spring, I'd look for one that is traditionally cool and calm!

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:28:57 from 67.172.235.55

I dunno, she seems to kick butt in adverse weather.

I am secretly entertaining the idea of Layton. Only because I'm fast enough to know how fast I'm not and I know I have no chance of competing at TOU! The course looks awful though so I'll probably stick with TOU and hope there isn't an earthquake or something that day. :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:31:53 from 67.172.235.55

Last year they had lightening and hail. ;o) And i have no doubt you could place top 10 at TOU.

From Jake K on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 14:33:27 from 155.100.226.54

yes Kelli - I think Rachelle is the only person who managed to run well @ Boston and UVM!

Layton wouldn't be awful as long as the salt lake isn't having one of its very smelly days :-)

Great progression run. I'm going to have to try those out on the next go 'round of training. You're rockin it.

TOU is an excellent choice.

I was waiting for that comment....

From Andrea on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 11:18:12 from 72.37.171.52

As far as the arms go, there is no "right" way to hold the arms....but there are positions that are more relaxed and don't hold tension...which is what you want. There is a little bit about arms in this post - http://www.sportsscientists.com/2007/09/running-technique-part-iv-running.html

Thanks Andrea!

From Hamdog Alum on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 19:05:03 from 71.90.5.18

I've seen a lot of weird running forms as a coach of young athletes who run by natural feel. I think Andrea's right about the arms, whatever keeps the tension free, but I can attest through coaching seminars that VO2 running has benefits when the arms don't cross the mid line of the body. Keeping the arms to the sides opens up the chest more allowing for deeper breathing.

TOU TOU TOU TOU TOU TOU TOU!! you will finish in the top 5-7 for sure!! Oh yah!! Go rachelle!! I am betting no hail this year. That was wicked fun last year as a pacer but as a racer it would have sucked!! beats the heat however :D. once again my vote is for TOU!!!
