Perfect weather this morning.  Seriously one of those mornings that you wish you had all the time in the world to run because it was just so nice.  I ran from my house to the mouth of Payson canyon and then back to my house 9 miles, picked up the pup and added a bit.  9.6 miles - 7:55 pace.  My legs feel really strong but I am not going to push any workouts at all for a few weeks.  20 minutes weights at home.

Mr. Mcmillan seems to thinks that based on my Lavender Days half time I am capable of a 3:05 marathon.  That sounds insanely scary to me but I am excited to have something new to train towards.

I agree w/ Mr. McMillan. That's not an "easy" new goal by any means, and it might take one or two tries to make it a reality, but its definitely within your capabilities. And if you shoot for 3:05 you're very likely to crack the 3:10 barrier even on an off day, which wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

I would say that your run on Saturday would have likely been in the 1:23s on a flat, sea level, fully PAVED course. That was a very impressive performance on a tough course.

You're rocking it, I'd say Mcmillan is totally right!! Great run :)

From RAD on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 11:53:32 from 98.202.23.178

Hmmm, well my 2 cents is that you totally blew away Mr McMillan's estimate for your half, so I think you'll blow away his prediction for your full. Just sayin'...

From JulieC on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 14:10:19 from 67.41.188.26

based of that time on Saturday on dirt for several miles and uphill a lot that you would be UNDER 3 hours at st george. April ran 1:29 in her half. no other races. Then her stellar SGM :D. just sayin' : D. do you want my number? my daughter even confused us in pictures from ragnar and uv marathon. You really are just my former younger self. A masters overall win for me for sure with you as my imposter. Of course people I am kidding ; D.

Woot. McMillan is never usually far off. You go go go Rachelle! :)

From Bonnie on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:11:16 from 150.135.114.219

I was thinking after I saw your results that you are close to the 3:00-3:05 range (probably closer to 3 at one of the Utah downhill courses). Greg just put up his new calculator today -- see my blog for the link!

You have a lot of talent (and a pretty good coach ;-)) Rachelle, good things are in your future!!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:25:27 from 159.212.71.17

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Bonnie - Do you know him? I feel like I am surrounded by a bunch of celebrities on this blog and I love it. I love the mcmillan calculator and will definitely check out the new link. Thanks so much!

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:27:13 from 155.100.226.54

Bonnie and Greg McMillan are pretty much BFFs!

From Bonnie on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:30:23 from 150.135.114.219

ha ha ha! I am Greg's "oldest" athlete (meaning he has been coaching me longer than anyone else ;-), well, I might be his oldest client in years too ;-)).

We almost hit the skids after our first attempt to extend the calculator to include Ultra distances -- Ian Torrence linked the calculator to his ultra-buddies and they ALL yelled about it not being accurate ;-) whoops!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:33:46 from 159.212.71.17

Wow that is seriously awesome Bonnie!

The new calculator basically tells me I need to jog slower on recovery days and run faster on tempo days. Seems pretty smart to me. :-) However I do not agree with it's calculation that I could run a mile in 5:27!!! I will not be attempting that. :-)

From Bonnie on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:36:42 from 150.135.114.219

I think, " jog slower on recovery days and run faster on tempo days" are words to live by ;-).

I think if you actually trained for a mile race (and remember, it would be on rested legs) - you could run much faster than you think!! But, I am with you, mile races hurt -- a lot.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:50:32 from 155.100.226.54

That would be assuming you dropped down to 30 miles a week and trained like a middle distance runner. Its very difficult to hit the times more than one step in distance away from your "best" event. Heck, I haven't hit ANYTHING that my half-marathon time would suggest I'm capable of. Guess that means I should stick to the half-marathon :-)

you never know though - if you ever get bored with marathons, instead of switching to ultras, train for the mile! :-)

From JulieC on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:54:25 from 67.41.188.26

Bonnie, I am on his email list and got the new link to his pace calculator just before reading this entry :D. going to check it out. wondering if i need to run slower on recovery days...

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:55:32 from 155.100.226.54

"jog slower on recovery days and run faster on tempo days"

Yeah, that's pretty much the most important thing I've learned about running in the past couple years summed up perfectly.

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:57:13 from 159.212.71.17

When I create my "fastest & most scenic in the State of Utah" one mile event down Payson Canyon I will let you know. :-) That might be the only place I could actually come close to hitting that pace!

If I dropped down to 30mpw I'd have to take up basket weaving, kayaking, tumbling, and tap dancing and I just do not have time for all that so I'll just stick to the higher mileage. :-)

Julie - slower is always better (and easier when you have someone to talk to)!! Stupid cows and horses in Payson still not learning how to talk. Haven't they seen Annabelle's Wish? Sheesh!

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 15:58:10 from 155.100.226.54

The Mt Nebo MILE sounds a lot better for your shins than the half-marathon. Lets do it - it can be my chance to break 4 minutes!

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:00:06 from 159.212.71.17

I bet you could break a world record at the event Jake. I'll bring the icecream. :-)

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:02:31 from 155.100.226.54

Steve Scott once ran like a 3:31 mile on a crazy downhill course in New Zealand.

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:03:54 from 159.212.71.17

I bet if you knew you were running for icecream you could easily beat that. ;)

From JulieC on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:10:59 from 67.41.188.26

Rachelle did you listen to my cookie monster youtube video?? I love CM!! MORE cookies WITH ice cream please!! :D

From Kam on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:13:11 from 68.66.163.179

I nominate this for the best blog exchange in 2012...really good stuff.

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:16:00 from 159.212.71.17

Julie - No I haven't seen it. But I love Cookie monster.....err actually I just love cookies. :)

Kam - Can I get your address so I can send you the official invite the the Mt. Nebo Mile event. It is a secret race though so don't tell anyone!

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 16:18:53 from 155.100.226.54

Your last secret race brought out the most competitive field in Utah this year, so I'm sure Cam Levins and Miles Batty will end up showing up for this one :-)

From NatalieK on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 17:15:36 from 24.2.101.184

I love that you said, "fastest and most scenic in Utah". Its so true. I have yet to run a race that isn't the fastest and most scenic in Utah, sure to be a Boston Qualifier! Sign me up for the puketastic mile event!
