Speed workouts are so freaking mental for me!  I knew that I wanted to do 6 x 800s this morning but kept trying to come up with excuses to skip or shorten the workout.  The closer I got to the track the slower I jogged. haha!  Finally got there and continued jogging all while giving myself a pep talk.  Who cared if the workout was a flop?  Who was I trying to impress anyway...the HS kids sleeping on the football field, the PTA club all decked out in they're hydration stations huddled in a circle around the mini van talking, the barefoot runner boy running stairs?  Duh....who freaking cares just run!

And with that ground breaking pep talk and the promise to myself of a pina colada slurpee on the way to work I was off.  3:03, 3:03, 3:03, 3:01, 3:00, 3:00  400 meter untimed recovery in between sets.  I hate 800s but this workout wasn't all that bad.  The most dissapointing thing about the morning is that I got stuck in traffic and never got my slurpee!

Half the battle with interval workouts is just getting yourself to actually start the first rep! I do that all the time - then once I start I realize its not that bad.

Excellent paces on those 800s. Very consistent and FAST!

From Andy on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 10:24:52 from 159.212.71.173

You are absolutely right. The hardest part about speed work is just getting started. Those are fantastic splits. You are on target for a great run at UVM.

From Smooth on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:29:40 from 174.27.212.157

I like your pep talk! :) AWESOME splits on the 800s! Hope you get your slurpee this afternoon! :)

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:39:32 from 67.41.188.232

those are excellent splits. I was thinking on my run today how "I sure would like to run with Rachelle, but I won't be able to keep up with her". just for my OCD info: did you use your garmin for the 800s or the actual line on the track for two laps?? I asked this question to JulieE as well. She puts her garmin on and pushes lap when she starts and lap when she ends so she doesn't lose the info by accidentally turning it off/on. Melanie stops hers when her garmin hit 0.5 miles. Jake told me last year that the garmin always reads it long because you have to hug the line real close to get the actual 800 and not longer. I am just wondering what I should do for myself. I am thinking the stop watch would be better so the garmin doesn't give room for error. JAKE???

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:42:55 from 67.41.188.232

btw I don't think I could run one at that split!! HUG YOURSELF and make sure you go and get that slurpee!! I also thought, on my run "how and the heck does Rachelle do over a hundred pushups?" then I thought "maybe it's her diet, she nice and thin and muscular and eats well probably no added sugar" Well thanks for proving my thoughts wrong. Sugar good for you!! :D.

From RAD on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:47:19 from 98.202.23.178

Go get that free pina colada slurpee! now I know why they are free today - to celebrate Rachelle's KILLER track workout!! :)

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:49:58 from 159.212.71.25

Julie - I just use my garmin which I'm sure isn't 100% accurate but unless I can talk Jake into coming down to Payson once a week and coaching me it will have to work. Today I started it over for each rep so I would have exact information. I hate it actually because I pay way to much attention to it. Don't want to run any longer/shorter and that takes way to much focus.

And yes I eat sugar...heaven forbid! haha!

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:51:18 from 155.100.226.54

a $10 stopwatch is the best way to time splits on the track... its exactly 400m. Garmins are great for runs on the roads, but become less and less accurate when you are making lots of turns, especially in the same direction. they just aren't precise enough. A great quote I read once - "you wouldn't use a garmin to measure carpet for your living room - different tools are needed for different applications"

I did a little test once, ran 10K on the track just to see what it would show. If you switch the view of the map to satellite and zoom in, it shows me weaving all over 8 lanes, through the stands, jumping the fence, etc... and it was off by 0.15.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/155339948

I can guarantee I was within 3 inches of the inside of lane 1 the entire time :-)

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 12:56:44 from 159.212.71.25

So Jake do you just run with the stop watch in your hand and try to stay on the inside lane of the track? I feel like I am always weaving for people and sprinklers on the track.

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:01:01 from 155.100.226.54

Well I wear the watch. I just have a basic timex ironman. The most indestructible watches in the world!

Even if you have to weave into lane 2 once in a while, its still a lot closer to being accurate than the satellite signal. You might weave a couple feet, but the satellite only has your location to within 20-30 feet, at best.

If people are walking in lane one I just tell them to move out of the way. They usually get the message after I blow by once or twice.

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:05:10 from 67.41.188.232

funny Jake. Stop watch is the ticket Rachelle. OR lap mode on the garmin and hit it when you cross the line and end at the line. Put the pace in HIDE mode, just have the time showing so you really don't need to buy a new watch :D. did you get your slurpee???

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:06:06 from 155.100.226.54

yes that is really the simplest solution - just use the garmin as a regular watch! :-)

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:06:31 from 67.41.188.232

Jake your example when you were zooming in makes me think how in the heck my cruise ship runs could ever even be close to accurate since I am sailing away and running in circles at the same time :D I think we talked about this. Fun times!!

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:06:36 from 159.212.71.25

Good to know. I am glad you brought this up Julie because it is something I've always wondered about but never really addressed. I feel like I've been cheating of all my SW now. haha!

It's the effort that counts right....and I'm still giving myself that slurpee regardless of the inaccuracy. :)

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:08:30 from 159.212.71.25

Lunch break in 5 minutes to walk to 7-11.....I'm not counting or anything. :)

Pretty sure I'll need more than just the free sample today!

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:11:00 from 155.100.226.54

It is the effort that counts. And its not like its going to be off by 0.1 per mile or anything like that...

So I'm just curious, if you are using the garmin to tell you where 800m is during a track workout - would you stop before you hit the line on the second lap? Or keep running past it even if you had run 2 laps but the watch didn't say 0.5 yet?

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:11:30 from 67.41.188.232

: D glad I could help. What are you running on Saturday?

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:12:40 from 67.41.188.232

Jake do they even make yard tracks any more??

From JulieC on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:13:43 from 67.41.188.232

to answer Rachelle for you-- garmins have been notorious for you getting to .5 before the line. but will have to hear from her what her garmin shows I guess.

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:13:45 from 155.100.226.54

not in america! :-)

some really old (ie. cinder) high school tracks might be 440 yards... otherwise everything is 400 meters

From Andrea on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:25:59 from 72.37.171.52

I would highly recommend using the marks on the track for workouts. They are 100% accurate. Even if you swerve a couple times, that is only going to add a couple feet (and is still way more accurate than the Garmin on the track).

From Andy on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:28:04 from 159.212.71.173

I agree with Jake and Andrea. I would never rely on a Garmin for distance measurement on a track. It does not take enough data points and they are not accurate enough for a good measurement.

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:28:41 from 155.100.226.54

I think we've lost sight of the fact that there was a barefoot boy running stairs! How old was he? Good think kids in Utah don't drink and leave broken beer bottles around the track! :-)

From Carina on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:29:16 from 204.15.86.83

Great workout rachelle!! Maybe you'll have time after work to get a slurpee :)

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:32:15 from 159.212.71.173

haha this is all getting way funny to me. I am such an idiot and not sure why I never put much thought into this before. I am a track "newbie" so I'll blame it on that. I am just picturing myself rounding that last corner and starring at my watch until it hits exactly ".50" and then hitting "STOP"!!! So yes to answer your question Jake it is usually right before the end of the second lap.

Yes the barefoot boy just running up and down the stairs barefoot, and did I mention 3/4 of the Payson Senior class was sleeping on the football field and I had to dodge them as they woke up and stumbled off the track. Cut me some slack okay? haha!

From Andrea on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:34:23 from 72.37.171.52

Haha! Rachelle - just keep in mind that you still had an awesome workout!!!

From Jake K on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:36:18 from 155.100.226.54

I know you are new to all this - I hope you don't think for 1 second that you didn't run a fantastic workout this morning!!! Seriously, you lose like a second here and there... its not really a huge deal and the workout was still awesome.

Its an interesting discussion point in the age of garmin, though.

What is going on down there - don't these kids have homes to sleep in?? :-)

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:41:27 from 159.212.71.173

Thanks guys it is all just really funny to me now. I know I still got a great workout in...and it was probably my heavy breathing that woke all of the children up. :)

From RAD on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 14:10:52 from 98.202.23.178

okay, I've gotta get in on this one. First of all - Jake, we know you were really running your 10K time trial while doing the bleachers AND jumping the fence, so don't try to tell us you weren't :)

second of all - Rachelle I hope your back and eating your slurpee!

Third - maybe it was just that it was the example set for me in running group, but I've always just used the lap button on the Garmin to time 800's. I've never thought about using the distance, because I'm anal enough I always worried about if it was at the beginning of the .50 or the end...like almost .51 - that was enough to get me to just use the distance on the track and lap the watch.

From runningafterbabies on Thu, May 24, 2012 at 10:04:44 from 71.195.219.247

Great workout, Rachelle. I'm with Jake on the Timex for the track. My Garmin always measures an 800M on the track as .51-.52 and when 1 mile is actually 4+ some change laps around the track it just doesn't make sense.

Just plan out your 200/400M splits ahead of time so you have a ballpark figure of where you need to be during your intervals, and I promise it will work just as well - or better than the Garmin.

Great workout! And I wouldn't be surprised if you got those same times in an actual 800 - I think looking at your Garmin actually slows you down a bit.
