Personal:

I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

45 minutes elliptical.

Ran 3.5 miles.  First 2.5 miles felt good.  In the 3rd mile I started to feel the same pain I felt Sunday.  It is bearable but gets worse the longer I go.  The pain is in my left calf and shin.  I am confident I will be okay with enough TLC.

As suggested by Jake, Andrea, and Lily I took my first ice bath last night.  I wanted to cry for the first 2 minutes but after that it really wasn't too bad and I can definitely tell it helped.  I will do the same thing again today and if all goes okay I am still planning to make the trip to Cali for Napa Valley Ragnar this weekend.  Luckily this is just for fun and I feel no pressure at all to push the pace.

PM:  ran an easy 3 miles with the dog and felt okay.  Going to ice, roll, and heat tonight.

Don't feel bad... I want to cry every time I do it too! :-) 20 miles a day, no problem for me... sticking my toes in cold water, I turn into a huge baby!

But it helps sooooo much!

Good job on the ice bath and for taking it easy :) So proud of ya!

I'm glad you are listening to your body and taking it easy. It will pay off!!!

Oh and I don't know how you do it, but you must start with the bath EMPTY on an ice bath. Turn the cold water on and let it fill up while you are in there. In no way should you attempt to get in the tub when it is cold!! Serious mistake :) It will freeze your nethers for MUCH too long! After the water is filled dump the ice bucket in - read for 15 min then exit. That is the only way I find it tolerable!

I have had similar problems when I first started. Your legs are just not used to the impact stress of all those miles. If it seems to be getting worse during the progression of the run you may have a stress fracture. Be careful.. Just my two cents but if I were you, I would run your miles on the grass or at the very least on the treadmill for a while. Hope that is helpful:)

I REALLY don't like ice baths but they are a necessary evil...unless your pain is primarily in the low leg and your butt, hips and upper legs are fine. That's when I do the ice bucket for my low legs. It is much more tolerable and I like to watch TV while I do it except that is why I got frost bite that one time...so no longer than 20!
