26.2 miles at the Olympic Oval, 8:58 pace.  I'm pretty confused about the results and the math of the laps but it's not like it really matters.  I had absolutely no intent of running a marathon on an indoor track.

I signed up yesterday morning because I wanted to hangout with Becca.  I ran the first 2 hours with her and then she had to leave.  I figured I'd find someone else to talk to and keep running around in circles.  I just ran at whatever pace other people who wanted to talk were running...I did not care at all.  I finished the marathon and then walked around for a bit.  

I thought about seeing how much longer I could go but I'm running 32 miles next Sat so I didn't want to push my luck.  I've basically reached an entirely new level of complete insanity even for me.  But it was fun and I'm not really sore at all which is nice.  My IT band is just a little tight from running 100 laps on a track...

Matt - Luckily (for me) the 32 mile run is not until this upcoming Saturday. A friend of mine is doing it for her 32nd B-Day. So of course I'm tapering and taking it easy to prepare...oh wait!

My cutest friend Heather turned 32 and has always wanted to do the Birthday miles thing.  I had an absolute blast helping her make it happen!  Nothing like hanging out with some of your favorite people for 5 hours.  My sister joined for the last 10 mile loop and all of my nieces & nephews were waiting to swim after 30.  So yes I am a total slacker and stopped while the girls went out and finished.  I'm really proud of Heather and glad I have friends that are as crazy as me.  It was such a fun and memorable day.

Sounds like a great 2015 plan! What 50 miler are you thinking of doing? That is on my goal list too...maybe Antelope Island or Pony Express. We'll see how it all plays out!

Toby - I think I will do buffalo on March 21st. I have until the 31st to decide.:/ I kind of figure I may as well ride this fitness I've got right now and go for it. Antelope is great (basically the same as buffalo) and the timing is perfect. I'm excited to see what you end up doing. Yay for new goals:). Keep me posted on what you decide.

Hopped on the TM to try out some tempo miles, 6:58, 6:53, 6:48, 6:44, 6:39.  I wanted 6 my body was done at 5 so we comprimised and I pushed it out another half mile at 6:31 pace.  1.5 cd.  This was definitely not easy for me as my speed is lacking right now.  But I really want to expirement with some training and practice going from slow to fast and back to slow.  As I really consider this ultra thing I want to kind of prove to myself that I can transition with pace and keep going no matter how fatigued I feel.

So I will take the hard/hard, easy/easy approach and see how it works for me.  Meaning I'll really push my two workouts a week but the recovery days will probably be 9+ min pace with my sister.  My feet can't really handle more than ~40-60 min at a fast pace.  I'm obviously changing my gait or the way I land when I run fast...so it seems like a good year for me work on improving my speed and try my luck at an ultra.  The way I see it I've basically 'accidently' already done the training so I may as well see it through and just run one. :)  This coming from the girl that has always said she hates distance.  Ha!  Never say never!

I think I may be having another midlife crisis but I'm just going to roll with it.  Phoenix full marathon on Feb 27th and then I'll add some miles and call it my last hoorah!  Buffalo 50 on March 21st.  I haven't registered yet but I think thats the plan ya'll.  

Time to get on the trails!!!

Toby - I am so undecided on Antelope. Mainly the thought of running alone for 33 miles terrifies me! If I can find someone to run with I will do it for sure. I am way too much of a social runner.

20 miles on Antelope Island with Janice and Greg, slow pace.  We did elephant head for those that are familiar with the island.  It was much more difficult than I anticipated.  Lots of climbing and switchbacks.  I'm glad I went out with them and now I know exactly what I'm getting myself in to if I decide to do the 50.   It wont be a piece of cake...

5.5 mi with my sis on the riv trail, 9:23 pace.  I could not fathom the thought of running anymore on that trail so I hit the TM for some tempo which is lame but nice for a little consistency and some T-Swift!

6 mile tempo in 40:40, 6:47ish pace?  I felt good.  My running is not 'awesome' right now but I'm throwing down the miles, staying injury free, and really enjoying it!   I'm assuming if I cut back for a week I could probably see some real improvement but that doesn't sound very fun.:)

27.3 miles, 8:40 pace.  I earned the coveted trucker hat.  It's way too big for my shrinking brain cell head.  I gave it to my 4 year old nephew, it fits him perfectly.

I had a good time running with Janice and Heather.  It was nice to catch up with RAD who was pacing 1:55.  Once we hit mile 23 some of the girls I was with were struggling and I felt really good and was just ready to be done.  They gave me the okay to go ahead so I did.  After running conservatively for 23 miles it was nice to just open up my stride.  The last 4 miles were sub-8 which is my new fast:) and the last .3 was 6:18 pace.

My feet are a piece of Sh**t.  Hills+asphalt+warmer temps+remotely pushing the pace=ridiculous pain.  So lame.  I'm kind of over it at this point and honestly don't know what to do.  If I decide I want to race hard again I will have to deal with it because I'm not willing to run through that pain anymore.  Until then I'll just keep on keeping on and feeding my crazy with more mileage.

It's the same problem I've been having for 2 years now. When I run fast my feet in the ball of the foot on the bottom and metatarsal area feel like they are on fire. The longer I run at a fast speed the worse it gets. If I back off the pace, run on trails, ect it gets better. I've tried every shoe under the sun! I've had cortisone shots which did not help in the slightest, x-rays that aim towards morton's nueromas and a diagnosis of metatarsalgia. Anyway I honestly think it has something to do with my form when I run fast or that I have a weird case of neuropathy.

That's frustrating. I have "hot spots" on my feet that seem to really get hot and blistered etc during marathons, and I can minimalize the severity by applying lots of vaseline to those areas before putting on my socks. But it sounds like your problem is a lot greater than that.

Well I wish you luck in finding a solution and also with your recovery.

sounds more like some "fallen metatarsals". I remember them well! I had to get some metatarsal pads to help raise them. The best thing I found for them and my big FLAT feet was getting into some Altra running shoes. My old style Brooks were just too narrow in the toe box and squeezed my toes together.....The Altra's have a zero drop platform and the toe box is super wide. They have given me a new lease on my running life and I'm almost running pain free now. Just a thought!

Thanks Riley and Tom. I've added metatarsal pads to all of my shoes and run basically solely in Altra Olympus now. The Altra's do help but that is what I was wearing on Saturday and it was still pretty bad. I do appreciate your feedback though Tom as I literally would try anything (and mostly have).

26.2 miles with Heather on the Phoenix marathon course, 8:15 pace.  3:37:08!!!!  Stoke!

Heather's previous marathon PR was 4:04.  She went into the race aiming for 3:38 which would give her a 7 min window on her BQ time of 3:45.  Her motives for such a massive PR were questioned.  My motives of supporting her motives were questioned.  BUT you just can't plug someone's heart into a running calculator.  Heather had the heart, she believed in herself, and she trained her booty off literally!

I was only there for the last 6 miles.  She didn't need me but I did enjoy the journey.  Seeing a good friend train their heart out for a race and then execute nearly flawlessly is pretty much my favorite.  I absolutely LOVE observing the transformation of someone gaining confidence in themselves and making the jump to a new level.

We got home from Phoenix at 4am...driving in a snow storm with 4 rambunctious girls the entire way...I crashed HARD and slept until 2pm.  10 hours of sleep was incredible.  My car was at my sisters in SF and she was in SLC so I was stranded in P town.  I wasn't going to run but I didn't really know what else to do...ha!  

2:30pm - 6 miles easy.  I honestly felt pretty trashed after the marathon Sat.  Nothing specific, just kind of accumulated fatigue.  I can't imagine why:) but it was actually kind of nice and relaxing to shake the legs out.

My left achilles hurts.....I think maybe from transitioning from faster to slower?... I noticed it when I stopped running with AmberD and it seemed to get progressively more bothersome the slower I ran with my sis.  It almost just felt like my shoes were not "tight" enough to support my achilles.  I've never really had any problems with my achilles and I'm assuming it is probably from tight calves.  I'll keep an eye on it because achilles injuries are nothing to mess around with!

Yoga class - The best!

7.5 miles on the TM with Heather, 8:00 pace.

I took 2 days off of running to baby my achilles.  I pretty much only take a day off of running if I'm dead (<------read: I have not not ran since 2 days after UVM 2013, I couldn't walk.)  

So 2 days off of running was GREAT for me.  Apparently not running doesn't kill you.  Who knew?  I don't mess around with achilles injuries because the only thing worse than cross training is not being able to cross train!  I did not have any pain today while running.  Soreness a little but no pain.  I am only really feeling it now when walking up and down stairs.  But I just need to be smart with this one and keep babying it if necessary.

6 miles with Megan and my sister, 9:05 pace.  Achilles bothers me when I alter my gait to jog slower so I had to jog ahead quite a bit.  These pregnant gals are unfortunately getting slower.  I'll probably spend my evenning creating a walky talky out of cans and string so that we can still communicate....I have a lot of time on my hands these days.

7 mile progressive run on the TM 48:16, 6:53 pace.  Started at 7:47 and finished at 6:27.  I wanted to quit about 17 times but settled for just one 15 second drink break.  Definitely feeling the Achilles by the end.  Sore but not painful.  To be honest I'm not real sure my brain filters sore vs. painful all that well though so I think I need to be cautious.

Spin tomorrow - I wrote it on the blog so someone out there in internet land hold me accountable...mmmk!

I would NOT do the 50 miler....if you injure that Achilles more you could be out for 2-3 months. Look at the big picture, you can always run a 50 miler.

I was supposed to run the buffalo 50 miler but I decided to drop.  I've never really DNS a race before that I can remember.  I'm an idiot and will basically run through any sort of pain/illness because my braincells are wired incorrectly.  But, but, but this achilles thing has kinda scared me straight.  I cannot afford a long term stay in a psychiatric facility if I blow up my achilles.  To be honest the achilles feels pretty good good and my left calf is becoming massive!  Amazing what some good scraping, a bazillion heel lifts, and throwing away my altra's can do.

I made the right choice and I'm sure the buffalo will forgive me.

21 with Janae.  First 9 with Josse down from South Fork and then meandering around Provo.  Stimulating Boston a bit with a lot of climbs.  We climbed this monster hill that I hadn't ever climbed before up to Provo temple.  I think I cried 3 times.:)  Then ended up in Zoobie land, gallavanted down to center street and then back up to Provo canyon to finish.  My feets were on fire so I wimped out at 21/22.  My achilles felt GREAT which is awesome.  I just can't win between my feet/achilles.  The shoes that are better for my achilles are worse for my feet and vice versa.  Whatevs.  8:07 pace overall for the run.

I wanted to try and get a decent tempo run in today because I want to attempt to help Bec acheive her goal of 3:20-3:22 at boston rather than hinder that!  Not sure today was the confidence booster I needed but oh well.  

I did 8.6 miles on the treadmill in 60 min.  Just cranked it up progressively.  I was hoping to finish feeling strong and all yeah baby I kick A$$!  Rather, I stopped twice for about 20-30 seconds each and cranked the incline all the way down to 0% by 20 minutes in and finished with some chub chafe in between my thighs.  It was awesome!  Oh wait no it wasn't.  haha April fools to me. how on earth were 6:30's easy peasy lemon squeezy a year ago and now honesly 1 minute at that pace is physically difficult.  Anywho I'm over it and honestly accepted it a long time ago.  I get that I haven't been training much but it's because I feel like crap running all the time.  Okay end of rant.  Do not comment, I just needed to scream to the world!!!  Somedays I just want to run fast and feel good!  Obviously I'm being dramatic but I do feel better.

I say this with SO much love!! I was at Dr Brady's this week getting worked (he's Josse's guy). We were talking about upcoming race plans and I mentioned after Ogden, I might need a break....physical and mental.

He said that if all runners would take off 2 months off a year.....one 4 week and two 2 weeks at different times throughout the year....that runners would be less injured and perform better.

Now I realize your an elite athlete and taking time off doesn't work well with your mojo❤️❤️❤️❤️ But maybe it would be helpful to your mind and body!

You can lift, bike...anything but run. Food for thought. ((Hugs))

I agree runners should take a break.... But the world would probably melt with our insanity! I really think this is what I need is complete break from all physical exercise but for some strange reason I have the hardest time not doing anything. Why is that?!? I know it would be so so good for me. We are all just a bunch of crazies.

I completely agree with the break thing. David's college cross country coach told him take a week off from everything after a marathon and the following week just do cross training. I have done this and it's a great re-charge. We need breaks more than we think.

Paced the 4 hour group for UVM this year.  Much different experience than I am used to at this race, I loved seeing it from a different perspective.  Wonderful group we had and I am very thankful for the opportunity.  I have no idea how I ran this race 1 hour faster a couple of years ago.

Really hoping and praying that starting an iron supplement will help me to feel better.  It's been a really rough go for me and I feel like my health reached an all time low this Spring/early Summer.  I've felt crappy running for well over a year but once it started effecting my everyday life I knew something had to be off with my body.  Running slow and getting out of bed became a real struggle.  I gained almost 10lbs and was beginning to feel depressed.  If I didn't have a job I could sleep all day and I did on the weekends.  

Tests revealed that my thyroid is underactive, cortisol levels are low, and last but certainly not least ferritin is low for a runner.  I'm hopeful that I'll feel better once I can get these levels up into the normal range.  I'm sure it will take lots of patience but at least I have some answers.  I long to run fast again and as bad as I've mentally wanted it my body has just resisted every last attempt.

PM:  5 mile lunchtime run in the rain. :)  9:23 pace.  Felt great.  I feel ok running slow with friends.  I just am bad at running slow by myself and anything under ~8:30 pace feels like a forced effort.

Humbling to go from being a decent runner to barely hanging on for 30 min jogs.  It completely sucks but it's so good for me and I know I'll appreciate my talent and take better care of my body if I'm ever able to get back at it.  In the meantime I'm enjoying helping others and finding new hobbies.  It's been so good for me to try things I completely suck at (yoga, spin, biking, weights, golfing, crafting!, kayaking, sleeping, sitting still, watching movies.) It's good for me and I'm learning patience along the way.

From around mid-March to very recently (maybe a few weeks ago?), I struggled to run 8:30 pace a lot of days. Running under 8:00 felt like 5:30 pace used to feel. It's starting to come back around for me now, a tiny, tiny bit at a time, and I suspect it will come back around for you as well.

Crafting definitely deserves "!" :-) All those other things you listed are good too. Hang in there.

Thanks so much for the words of encouragement Jake, it means a lot to me. This is without a doubt testing my patience but I know I'll survive. It is really exciting to me to hear that you are starting to come back because that does give me hope. :)

3:55 pacer at BC marathon.  Came in at 3:53:32.  Whoops!  In my defense (as if I need to defend my pacing abilities) we wanted to give those BQ people a 60 second cushion.  60 seconds should not have turned into 90 but it did.  I'm not perfect yo!  I'm also not going to stand at the finish line and then walk accross at my assigned time.  So tacky!  

I think I helped some people and I had good time.

i figured it out rachelle...u were sore from the marathon u ran not a 15 miler. reading blogs in reverse sometimes creates misinformation in my brain. he he. great pacing btw. two minutes faster in a half is sucky. u did well. i paced the des news at 3:45 and came in at 3:43. the course was long by 0.2 if anylonger I would have been right on and u need to give that kind of cushion with mountain readings of the garmin. Good job!! and thanks for laughing at me :D

I'm starting to enjoy the cross-training and break from running.  I absolutely will not even consider racing again until 2016.  My body has a lot of healing to do.  Right now my hamstrings are probably my biggest ailment but with a lot of TLC I think they are slowly getting better.  Amazing how when one piece of your body breaks down it's a rippling effect.  I feel so much better now that I've just thrown the pressure away and comitted to getting better. :)

i wish you the best. it's not always easy to commit to a break, even when the body has been hurting for awhile. i hope the healing process moves along quickly for you and that you start feeling better and better. i'm sure that you will make strong return to running whenever you are ready.

Hey Rachelle - a couple months ago I was worried my hamstrings would NEVER get better, now I'm already at the point where I don't even really think about them anymore. Keep being patient.. with time and TLC you can bounce back. Enjoy easy paced fall running!

This article focuses on ultrarunning but its very well-written and I found a lot of parallels to my own running, attitude, breakdown, etc. It really struck a chord for me. Andrea suggested we keep a copy pinned to the fridge just in case I start to get crazy again :-)

AM:  4 miles with Megan.  My body loves easy short runs.  9:26 pace today is what felt good. :)

45 min elliptical - I average at least 3 miles per 20 min on the elliptical....but today I did 7.5 in 45 min.  Alternating between 7 - 11 and never below 6.  I wish I knew what any of this crap meant.  I'm pretty sure I could win an elliptical race though. ;)

I would say so...i think when I do the elliptical...last time was like three years ago....I could barely do 11 minute miles. YOU ROCK!!
